Such a romantic notion: Two souls, finding one another to be together in love forever. A perfect union destined to be so from the start. Can such a fantastic idea ever come true? It can and often does!
Far from destiny bringing lovers together, love at first sight is a self-fulfilling prophesy.
From childhood we find ourselves captivated by the ideal of the perfect lover and a perfect shared life. Everything from fairy tales, books, film, popular music, social media, popular press, friends, family and Western culture in general reverberate with this ideal. As we mature, we set-about finding our ideal lover who will bring that perfect life.
Our search for perfection follows one of two paths:
We come across those who at first don’t seem to be perfect, but we realise through falling in love they bring the life of perfection we imagined, and then we recognise their perfection within it.
On the other hand, we come across someone who’s presence instantly tells us our perfect lover stands before us as imagined within our ideal. And when we get to know them we find they do indeed bring the perfect life we thought they would, soon followed by our bestowal of love upon them.
It's this path—seen in hindsight—that is love at first sight.
